Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening
RYLA is an intense and incredibly challenging program, sponsored by California and Nevada Rotary Districts 5180 of Northern California and 5190 of Northern Nevada, and has been designed to engender passion, resilience, determination, mental toughness, gratitude and compassion. In addition, the program will instill in the participants the value of Service above Self, a core Rotary belief.
You will also have the opportunity to participate in a character building program provided by the Grizzly Creek Ranch Ropes Course, which focuses on leadership, effective communication, trust and cooperation. Utilizing adventure, personal commitments and shared insights, you will gain an increased sense of confidence in yourselves and in your team.
Every year, Rotary Club of Elko sends 4+ Elko High School Juniors to this week long camp, on a fully funded scholarship. It is the opportunity of a lifetime!

Annual Scholarships
The Rotary Scholarship has been awarded to the Most Outstanding Student of Elko High School since 1930. The scholarship was later expanded to include one senior from Elko High School and one senior from Spring Creek High School.
The Most Outstanding Student Scholarship focuses on a student’s academic prowess and overall high school career. The Rotary scholarship committee reviews academic achievement, service opportunities, extracurricular activities, and work experience to select scholarship recipients.
The Heart of a Rotarian Scholarship started in 2023. The committee will review academic achievement, service opportunities, extracurricular activities, and work experience, with a larger focus on volunteering in the community and within Rotary to select a scholarship recipient. This scholarship is open to any Elko County High School Senior who will be attending college or trade school in the fall, or any GBC student continuing education in the fall.

High School Speech Contest
Rotary Club of Elko hosts this annual competition with students from Elko High School. Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise hosts the Spring Creek High School competition. Winners compete against each other to see who advances to the next level competition.
Dictionaries for 3rd Grade Students in Elko County
Rotary International started the Dictionaries Program in 1995. Rotary Club of Elko launched our program a few years later. Every year we deliver approximately 800-900 dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in Elko County.
The children are always in awe that they may keep the dictionaries – for many it is the first book they have ever been ‘given’. Before the pandemic, our club members went into each classroom and gave a 30 minute presentation while handing out the dictionaries. For a couple years, we have had to deliver the books for teachers to distribute. We look forward to resuming our presentations and personal delivery of dictionaries in the 2023-2024 school year.
In grocery stores and during RYLA/Scholarship interviews, we frequently hear “you guys gave me a dictionary when I was a kid!” It always brings us joy to hear this!
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
